As an upper grades elementary classroom teacher, you take on many different roles that each come with their own set of responsibilities. One of these many roles includes identifying and supporting Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) learners. Many students in Person County Schools are identified as AIG at the third grade level following the cognitive abilities test (CogAT).
The purpose of this handbook is to provide a resource that targets your role working with AIG students as an upper grades (3-5) elementary teacher. By using this handbook, you will learn that there are many ways to identify AIG learners in addition to CogAT testing at any point during a student’s school career, not just third grade. You will be able to envision yourself as an educator who recognizes the characteristics of AIG students and utilizes this recognition to support the identification process and the interactions you have with your students as an educator. This handbook will also explain the laws and local policy surrounding AIG education. Taking into account characteristics of AIG students, the identification process, and legislation regarding AIG education, this handbook will collectively serve as a resource for you to enhance your curriculum and instruction of AIG students before, during, and after the identification process.
